A amplifier speaker level output can even be connected to a balanced line input using either a line transformer or a simple resistor network. Some amplifiers (usually only the highest powered models) use a "bridged" output which is a little more difficult to connect to a interface or mixer input, but can still easily be done. Usually the amplifier output has one side referenced to ground, so it's easy to connect that to an unbalanced "line" input. Some solid state amplifiers don't strictly have to have a dummy load connected, but generally it's a good idea to do so. If you have a tube amplifier (with an output transformer) you certainly need a load if you're not going to keep your speaker connected. It will have the amplifier distortion (as long as a dummy load Is used), but of course will not have the frequency peaks, cabinet resonances and response notches and other anomalies that the speaker contributes to the sound. Taking a direct output from the amplifier will not sound like what you're hearing from a speaker, but can be a usable signal. The "dummy load can be as simple as a wire wound resistor rated for the amp's output, or it can be a "speaker simulator" or load and attenuator which tries to simulate the resonances that a speaker adds to the cab sound. If the amplifier you're using is in fact just an amplifier, you can connect the output to a line input, but to protect the amplifier from possible damage you need to also connect it to a "dummy load" that will absorb and dissipate the amplifer's output power.

If your amplifier is in fact a guitar cabinet with a speaker, to truly get the sound of the cabinet you, of course, need to record the sound with a mic (or commonly a couple of mics) in front of the speaker.

I'd like this setup with the intention of recording. If so, can I get a good sound from it using my amp? Ie no modelling software. The thread title is pretty self-explanatory: I'm wondering if it's possible to hook my guitar up to my amplifier, and then hook the amplifier up to my m-audio fast track ultra interface.
